Scavenger Hunt

One way to maximize our learning opportunities was through our scavenger hunt tasks. This month, we would choose or create eight tasks that would get us out there to experience China and Japan.

Take the subway to the end of a line

About half of the class decided to take a trip to the end of one metro line and we went to Disney but only up to the gate. It was rainy and too cold for a day a Disney. However, the fun of that day was in the challenge of figuring out the subway with our minimal Chinese.

Go to the park and ask someone to take my photo

We went to the park nearest to ECNU for our linguistic landscape project and I managed to, in Chinese, catch the attention of an unsuspecting stranger to take our photo.

Ask someone to take a photo of you at your favorite spot at ECNU

This was right outside this very peaceful library on the river. I like this spot because I love how secluded and quiet it was. I didn’t even know that it was here for the longest time because it was so hidden in trees, but it was in a convenient location with a beautiful view.

Go to the Observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

This was an event I did on a whim because I had no plans for most of the day, but I’m glad I went here because the view was amazing and it’s not very often do I get a chance to see Japan or anywhere from that height.

Photo at the Bund with the Bund Bull

It was a chilly day and the weather wasn’t the best, but we got our picture with the Bund Bull. The view was also pretty nice despite the foggy weather.

Buy a postcard, go to the post office, and mail it to someone

This was the most challenging scavenger assignment for me because I was very intimidated by the man at the post office and I became very flustered as I tried to buy stamps with my very jumbled Chinese.

Buy something at the Global Harbor grocery store

It certainly was an impressive grocery store within the mall because it seemed like it had almost anything and I got lost and all I have to show from it are these stickers that ironically are Japan-themed (By this time, we haven’t even visited there.)

Visit the Meiji Jingu Shrine and Harajuku

The Meiji Shrine was impressive in size (170 acres; I had visited much smaller ones before this) and I didn’t realize how much surrounding area dedicated to it. I enjoyed seeing how foreigners and locals alike would make offerings and prayers.
